Kajian ini menelaah keberadaan “Haji Mukim” dari Palembang, yakni bagaimana kedudukan dan peran yang mereka lakukan setelah mereka kembali ke Palembang. Kajian sejarah intelektual ini dengan menggunakan metode historis, dengan tahapa-tahapan yakni: heuruistik, kritik, interpretasi dan historiografi. Adapun pendekatan dalam kajian ini adalah pendekatan multidimensional dengan meminjam konsep-konsep dari Sosiologi maupun Antropologi. Konsep dari sosiologi antara lain adalah: elit, mobilitas social, reprositas, kedudukan, peran. Konsep dari antropologi antara lain: perubahan kebudayaan. Kajian ini membuktikan bahwa ternyata pembelajaran yang mereka terima dari Timur Tengah memungkinkan mereka mendirikan jaringan pendidikan yang tidak tergantung dengan pemerintah Kolonial Belanda, yakni dengan mendirikan sekolah sendiri. Dengan demikian mereka berada di luar spectrum system Kolonial.
